Paid Off in Two Months: Inside Skin Select’s XERF Launch
Tiffany sat in the treatment chair while Jinli loaded the handpiece.
They had done this before: one on the table, the other working, both paying attention to what each treatment actually delivered. It was their standing rule before anything went on the menu at Skin Select. They had tested ultrasound devices on each other, lasers, injectables, biostimulators. Some made the cut. Most didn’t.
Jinli pressed the XERF handpiece to the left side of Tiffany’s face and began. The sensation was warmth delivered in pulses, the handpiece moving across her skin while integrated cooling kept the surface comfortable. When it was over, Tiffany looked in the mirror. The left side of her face was visibly tighter than the right.
“That was the moment,” Tiffany says. “We both knew.”
They booked training for January. Within two months of seeing their first patient, the device was fully paid off.
What Their Patients Needed
Tiffany Wang, PA-C, and Jinli Wu, PA-C, opened Skin Select, a concierge med spa in Brentwood, Los Angeles, with backgrounds in plastic surgery and dermatology. Their clientele are working professionals, executives, and entertainment industry patients — people on planes every other week, in rooms with important stakeholders, expected to show up camera-ready without warning.
Their calendars don’t have room for recovery. Redness on a Tuesday is a problem if you’re presenting to a room on Wednesday. Peeling skin doesn’t work when you’re traveling to close a deal.
“These patients don’t pause,” Jinli says. “They need something that keeps up with them.”
The treatments that delivered real results all came with real downtime. That was the gap. Not a shortage of options, but a shortage of options that fit how their patients actually live.
XERF operated differently. The device delivers monopolar radiofrequency energy at two frequencies simultaneously, reaching depths surface treatments can’t match — all without needles or numbing. Integrated cooling keeps the surface comfortable while the energy works below it. For Tiffany and Jinli, that combination was the answer their patients had been waiting for.
“When you understand the mechanism,” Jinli says, “you select patients correctly and set accurate expectations. That’s when outcomes become repeatable.”
Before the First Patient
Most of the work that shaped the first two months happened before the practice ever treated a patient.
Alex, who leads marketing at Skin Select, focused on education before the device arrived: blog posts and articles explaining how the treatment works, videos walking through what to expect. By the time most patients booked their first appointment, they had already done their research and made up their minds.
“When patients come in educated, the consultation becomes a conversation,” Alex says. “They have questions, not doubts.”
The space they walk into matters too. Skin Select was built to feel personal, not clinical. For patients used to high standards in everything else, that registers before anyone says a word.
In the room, the split-face demonstration does what words can’t. Tiffany treats one side of the face, sets the handpiece down, and hands the patient a mirror. The tissue is visibly tighter on the treated side.
“They see it in real time,” Tiffany says.
The phrase patients say most often in that chair: “I can’t believe this is after one treatment.”
Two Months In
Within two months, the device was paid off. Inquiries have come steadily since, most of them referrals from patients who mentioned the results to someone.
The patient profile reflects Brentwood, Los Angeles: professionals in their 30s, 40s, and 50s who want results they can point to without recovery time attached. Male patients have been a consistent part of that, drawn to the same thing everyone else is: visible results, no disruption to their week.
Tiffany and Jinli trained with Cynosure Lutronic’s clinical team before seeing their first patient and started treating immediately after.
The Demand for XERF Continues to Grow
The referrals are still coming in. Patients who saw results told someone, and those people called. Tiffany and Jinli are doing what they’ve always done: testing treatments on themselves before recommending them, taking consultations one at a time, watching whether patients come back.
Most do.
“It exceeded our expectations,” Jinli says. “And we had high ones.”
