How One Family Physician Built a Thriving Aesthetic Practice — and Found a New Passion Along the Way
For Dr. Patrick Chang, family medicine was always about helping people feel better.
But after ten years as a full-time Family Physician, the realities of modern healthcare began to take a toll.
“There’s a lot of burnout in family medicine,” he says. “A lot of paperwork, a lot of administrative work. I started looking for ways to practice differently while still helping patients.”
Based in London, Ontario, Dr. Chang began exploring aesthetics almost by accident. While attending a neurotoxin training course in Ottawa, he met a Cynosure Lutronic representative during lunch who introduced him to the world of energy-based devices and lasers.
“It completely piqued my interest.”
At first, he kept things simple.
“I started with neurotoxins because it was easy to integrate, and honestly, it changed the way I practiced medicine.”
But the more aesthetic patients he treated, the more he realized there were concerns injections alone couldn’t address. He wanted to do more.
That curiosity eventually led him deeper into the world of lasers and regenerative aesthetics.
Building an Aesthetic Practice — One Step at a Time
After attending a conference in Toronto, Dr. Chang invested in his first devices: Elite iQ and a radiofrequency microneedling (RFMN) machine.
“I loved it. The patients loved it. The results were great.”
Over time, his aesthetic patient base steadily grew through referrals and word of mouth. Patients began seeking him out for more advanced treatments and personalized skin solutions.
But the journey wasn’t always easy.
Within his large medical clinic — home to nine full-time physicians — aesthetics carried a stigma.
“A lot of doctors don’t understand aesthetics because we’re not traditionally trained in cosmetics or plastic surgery,” he explains. “There can be negativity around it.”
Still, he believed in what he was seeing firsthand.
“The patients are happier. Their confidence improves. Their mental health improves. They take better care of themselves. There’s really no downside.”
Eventually, Dr. Chang carved out his own path, creating a boutique-style medical aesthetic clinic focused on customized treatment plans, education, and long-term skin health.
Discovering XERF in South Korea
As his practice evolved, so did his interest in advanced technology and Korean aesthetic philosophy.
Dr. Chang traveled to South Korea to visit Cynosure Lutronic headquarters and learn more about the future of aesthetics firsthand.
“At the time, I was actually more interested in Ultra than XERF,” he says. “But then I experienced XERF firsthand in South Korea at Cynosure Lutronic headquarters, alongside the engineers, innovators, and clinical experts behind the technology itself.”
The experience immediately changed his perspective.
“I saw the instant effects. Obviously there’s some ‘Cinderella effect,’ but even so — wow. The results were immediate.”
That trip ultimately led him to bring both XERF and Ultra into his growing clinic — becoming one of the earliest adopters of XERF and the first clinic in Southwestern Ontario to offer the technology.
Bringing Korean Aesthetic Philosophy to Canada
One of the biggest lessons Dr. Chang took away from Korea was the cultural difference in how patients approach aging.
“In Korea, aesthetics is much more about prevention and barrier repair,” he explains. “In North America, we tend to wait until something is a problem and then try to fix it.”
That philosophy now shapes the way he treats patients in London, Ontario.
“We should be focusing more on maintenance treatments, skincare, and taking a holistic approach to aging.”
Education has become a major part of his practice, especially because many of his patients are completely new to aesthetics.
“About 40% of our patients have never done aesthetics before — no skincare, no neurotoxins, no lasers.”
His background as a family physician creates an environment patients trust.
“Because we’re inside a medical clinic, patients feel comfortable. They’re coming to a doctor’s office. It feels reputable and safe.”
That positioning has helped remove barriers for first-time aesthetic patients across all age demographics.
Growing Organically — Without Advertising
Despite the clinic’s rapid growth, Dr. Chang says he has never relied heavily on advertising.
“It’s all grown organically.”
Today, his schedule is split nearly 50/50 between family medicine and aesthetics, balancing a roster of approximately 1,700 family practice patients while continuing to grow his aesthetic clinic through evenings and weekends.
“I’m honestly the limiting factor right now,” he says with a laugh. “There’s so much demand.”
For Dr. Chang, aesthetics didn’t replace medicine, it expanded what medicine could look like.
“I love the variety. I love educating patients. I love seeing how much more confident they become.”
And for other physicians considering aesthetics?
“There are really only benefits,” he says. “More variety. More financial freedom. More impact. It just brings a different energy to your day.”
